Documents Required for Sikkim
Requirements can change. Confirm the latest rules before travelling.
Permit rules depend on nationality, route, season, and the places included in your itinerary. Carry original documents and clear photocopies.
Indian Domestic Tourists
- Carry a valid government photo identity document, such as Aadhaar, voter ID, driving licence, or passport.
- Carry a copy of your identity document and recent passport-size photographs where a permit application requires them.
- Keep your booking, hotel, and vehicle details available for verification at checkpoints.
- For protected or restricted areas, arrange the required Inner Line Permit or Protected Area Permit through an authorised travel agency or the relevant authority.
Foreign Tourists
- Carry a valid passport and Indian visa or other valid permission to enter India.
- Carry copies of your passport, visa, and recent passport-size photographs.
- Complete any required registration with the Foreigners Registration Office or local immigration authority.
- Foreign visitors may need a Restricted Area Permit for Sikkim and additional permits for protected areas. Confirm eligibility and permitted routes before booking.
Restricted and Protected Areas
North Sikkim, parts of East Sikkim, and other protected border areas may require additional permits. Permit availability, entry points, vehicle rules, and group requirements can vary.
Do not rely on an old permit or an online summary. Check the current rules for your exact route and travel date with the Sikkim Tourism and Civil Aviation Department or an authorised permit office.
Before You Travel
- Make sure your name and date of birth match across all documents.
- Keep digital copies securely on your phone and email, in addition to paper copies.
- Ask your tour operator to confirm which permits they will arrange and which documents you must provide.
- Check the latest official notices before departure.
